The Storm Map™

Recognize the weather. Regulate yourself. Choose your navigation.

"You can't control the weather. You can regulate your own temperature."

Key Principles
🌡️You cannot control another person's emotional temperature. You can regulate your own.
🤝You can influence the dynamic — without controlling the other person.
Before the storms — two terms worth knowing

Thermometer response — the automatic reading you take of someone else's mood, and the reaction it triggers in you without a pause in between.

Thermostat response — the deliberate one: noticing the temperature, and choosing your own setting instead of matching theirs.

Each storm below shows both — so anh/em can recognize which one is running.

6 Common Emotional Storms · tap to open

🔥
1 · Heat Storm
Anger · Frustration · Defensiveness
▾
What it feels like
The room gets hot. Voices rise. You feel attacked. Your body wants to fight back.
Thermometer response
"You raised your voice, so I'll raise mine."
Thermostat response
"I notice the heat. I don't have to add more."
First move
Lower the temperature before solving the problem.
Wisdom
I can be firm without becoming heated.
🌪️
2 · Anxiety Storm
Fear · Uncertainty · Urgency
▾
What it feels like
Nothing may have actually happened yet, but your mind starts filling in the blanks. Worry. Overthinking. "What if?"
Thermometer response
"This must mean something bad."
Thermostat response
Separate information from imagination. Get curious instead of convinced.
First move
Ask: What do I know? What am I assuming? What am I thirsty for?
Wisdom
Uncertainty is uncomfortable, but discomfort isn't proof of danger.
❄️
3 · Freeze Storm
Withdrawal · Shutdown · Numbness
▾
What it feels like
You go quiet. You disconnect. You avoid, numb out, or want to disappear.
Thermometer response
"I shut down so I don't feel."
Thermostat response
Don't force connection. Don't disappear without explanation. Create a path back.
First move
"I need time to process. I don't want to abandon this conversation. I'll come back when I'm ready."
Wisdom
Taking space can protect connection when it has a path back.
🌊
4 · Chasing Storm
Pursuit · Reassurance-seeking · Escalation
▾
What it feels like
One person moves away. The other moves closer. The more one withdraws, the more the other pursues.
Thermometer response
"If I try harder, they'll come back."
Thermostat response
Stop adding movement to the cycle. Pause. Regulate. Check your own intention.
First move
Ask: Am I trying to create connection — or trying to eliminate my anxiety?
Wisdom
I can invite connection without chasing a response.
☁️
5 · Fog Storm
Misunderstanding · Assumptions · Confusion
▾
What it feels like
Nobody is necessarily angry. Nobody is necessarily withdrawing. But nobody understands what the other means.
Thermometer response
"They don't get me." "They're doing this on purpose."
Thermostat response
Slow down the story. Increase the clarity. Check before you interpret.
First move
"Can I check what you meant by that?"
Wisdom
Clarity is often better than interpretation.
⚡
6 · Lightning Storm
Sudden Trigger · Unexpected Impact
▾
What it feels like
Everything seems fine. Then one sentence lands. Boom — you're triggered. Strong reaction, big impact.
Thermometer response
"Why did that affect me so much?" "I overreacted."
Thermostat response
Don't demand an explanation in the middle of the storm. Regulate first. Get curious later.
First move
Breathe. Ground yourself. Then ask: What did that moment touch inside me?
Wisdom
A strong reaction is a reason to become curious, not a command to act.

Storm Map is the entry point — it hands off to LOVES once you're regulated enough to engage.

Important Reminder

The Storm Map is not a diagnostic tool for the other person. It's a mirror and a compass for you. Focus on: what weather am I experiencing, and what is happening inside me?

You don't need the storm to disappear. You need the skills to navigate through it.

💧 Work with the storm, not against it. ❤️ Navigate the flow. 🧭 Keep your direction.
